It is a very soft stone and can be scratched by your fingernail (these can be easily snapped or broken into smaller pieces).
Also called Satin Spar and Alabaster. From the Greek, gyps meaning "burned" mineral. Selenite from the Greek in allusion to its pearly luster (moon light) on cleavage fragments.
Gypsum is said to be a natural insulator, and feels warm to the touch when compared to a more ordinary rock or quartz crystal.
LOCALITIES: Naica, Mexico; Sicily; Utah and Colorado, USA among other places
You'll get one large piece or several smaller ones.

This also is from Jay's Crystal Bonanza in Mt. Ida, AR. I thought it was interesting. Good starter stone.
