SELF HEALED CRYSTALS
This week we’re going to talk about Self Healed crystals. What they look like, how they present and what makes their special energy unique.
WHAT ARE SELF HEALED CRYSTALS?
Self Healed crystals are crystals that have been broken from the matrix and started to re-seal their broken ends with new growth.
First of all, what is the matrix and secondly, how might this happen?
All crystal points (which aren’t Double Terminated) start out on a cluster.
A cluster could be compared to your hand. Your palm would represent the matrix and your fingers would be the crystal points protruding from the matrix.
In the ground, clusters grow along veins. When the earth moves and shifts, individual points or sometimes clumps of points break off.
The broken ends of these crystals (and also the space where they came off the cluster) will often continue to grow, or what we call “self-heal” (hence the name, Self Healed).
WHAT DO SELF HEALED CRYSTALS LOOK LIKE?
Self healing on a crystal (most often) looks like scales or triangular layers covering the previously broken areas.
This varies from very teeny almost imperceptible scales to large triangular layers.
They don’t always present just on the base where they broke from the matrix.
Self healing can be present on the bottom, sides or even tip of a point or cluster.
There is a lot of movement in the earth during a crystal’s lifespan, and they often get jostled and broken.
Therefore, Self Healed crystals also present as crystals that were broken in half but sort of “glued” back together with new growth.

The sliding gallery shows different presentations of Self Healed crystals.
Oftentimes, in order to see the features, you need to tilt the crystal toward the light, just as you do when trying to see Record Keepers or any other surface feature.
SLIDE 1: In the beginning stages, the crystal is just starting to form self-healed layers over the broken area. When a crystal is “freshly broken”, it will look shiny, like broken glass, unlike the crystal shown, which has a pattern forming on the broken surface.
SLIDE 2: As it continues its journey, Self Healed crystals start to show evidence of triangular layering.
SLIDE 3: These crystals show what the advanced stages of self-healing can look like. The triangular layers become much more pronounced.
SLIDE 4: The self-healing may present in different ways. Sometimes the triangular layers are flattened like these.
SLIDE 5: Sometimes a crystal is broken in pieces and heals itself back together. This happens in all different ways. Sometimes the crystal is broken in pieces, like the one pictured. Sometimes in half, vertically or horizontally or chunks are dislodged and re-healed in place.
Again,there is a lot of movement in the earth, so the crystals may experience any number of scenarios, including twisting, shearing, snapping, full or partial breaks.
CRYSTALS WITH SEDIMENT OR CLAY TRAPPED IN SELF HEALED FRACTURES
As I mentioned earlier, crystals may break in half with Earth movement or may even split with movement that is twisting in nature.
A lot of times the broken crystal will grow around sediment (clay, iron oxide, etc) in the crack where it breaks.
This is subsequently grown into the break on the point (leaving an orange hue in the crystal like the one pictured).
I refer to these crystals with this trapped clay or sediment as “Mineral Still Attached”. Not a technical term, but more a descriptive one.
Self Healed crystals with mineral, iron oxide or clay trapped within or on them have a powerful message to share.
WHAT IS THE MESSAGE ?
Because the crystal carries a portion of where it developed (the trapped clay or iron oxide from the crystal mine), its message to us is to “remember where you come from“.
This speaks to many levels and layers. It refers to:
- where we come from physically,
- what we’ve been through, (both emotionally and physically),
- where we come from in this life/incarnation,
- the experience we bring from past lives or incarnations, and
- where we come from ultimately (Spirit), etc.
These crystals give us pause to reflect on our past and contemplate the residue of the experiences we have accumulated.
WHAT IS THE ENERGY THAT SELF HEALED CRYSTAL PRESENTS?
As you might imagine, these crystals are good for healing. They have a healing energy because they have been through traumas and kept right on growing in a new way, regardless.
It is helpful to our own healing journey to use the Self Healed crystal as an example of how it is possible to heal ourselves.
Just as it did with the crystal, it may take a long time. It may be a very slow process, but every day, we are adding a layer of healing to our wounds.
Some crystals have been broken, healed, re-broken and healed again. As long as they are growing, they keep on healing the breaks.
The energy of Self Healed crystals is sturdy, optimistic and persistent. They are not quitters!
As an aside, very often, internal fracturing from damage sustained causes Rainbows [blog post on Rainbows].
Rainbows remind us that our wounds also bring beauty and depth which might not have been there if we hadn’t experienced the injury (whether it be physical, emotional, mental or spiritual). [Rainbows for adoption]
When you work with crystals that have sustained damage or trauma, remember to check to see if there are Rainbows.
This is a reminder that our traumas (when we are broken) often bring us gifts that we might not have noticed initially.
CAN CRYSTALS HEAL OUT OF THE EARTH?
I have had people ask whether crystals are able to self heal once they are out of the Earth.
Geologists would tell you that no, it is not possible for crystals to change once they are out of the environment in which they grow.
However, I have had lots of people over the years tell me that crystals which live with them have indeed changed and healed areas which were not previously healed.
I can’t say that I have noticed this happening with any of my crystals, but that certainly doesn’t mean I don’t believe that they can.
Possibly scenarios: the person has become more in tune with the subtle nuance of their crystal friend? Maybe they are noticing what they may not have been able to notice before? OR, if neither of these are true, perhaps their crystal did continue to grow and heal itself outside of the typical growing environment!
