This Arkansas quartz crystal point is Empathic with some chips/dings. There are also Self Healed areas indicating that some of this damage occurred during growth (some is fresh). It is lightly Smoky and has some patches of Iron Oxide on it. Crystals with the mineral and rust still on (and clay in some cases) tell us to "remember where you come from". It speaks to many levels and layers. Where we come from physically, what we've been through, both emotionally and physically, where we come from in our past (this life) and where we come from ultimately (Spirit) etc. These crystals give us pause to reflect on our past and contemplate the residue of the experiences we have accumulated. It is a Devic Temple (Fairy Frost, Mirror Fractures and Rainbows). The Rainbows are elusive and you need a bright light and patience to find them. This is a metaphor for how our traumas and challenges bring us gifts but they aren’t always obvious (you might have to look). There are Imprints and Keys. Two deeply penetrating Bridge or Inner Child points – I get the energy of both (connection/perspective and connecting with your Inner Child). There are Sigils on the faces and Lineated Sides. This crystal looks kind of beat up initially, but when you actually look at it, you see that some of what appears to be breaks are actually Keys and Imprints. This crystal says “remember where you come from, stay grounded and connect with your Inner Child for insights and healing.”

EMPATHIC - Empathic (broken, chipped and otherwise damaged) crystals bring out compassionate feelings in us. The crystal picks up this empathy and amplifies it. Often the lesson of Empathic crystals is to remember to be compassionate and empathetic to our OWN chips, dings and perceived flaws and to remember we are still beautiful, whole, lovable and worthy.

SELF-HEALED - Self-Healed crystals have been broken (either from the matrix or breaks in the body during the growth cycle) and have started to re-seal their broken end with new growth. Self-Healing looks like scales or triangular layers (or when broken in pieces, appears to be ‘glued’ back together). It may be present on the bottom, sides or even tip of a point or cluster. Self-healed crystals are good for healing, as one might imagine and also have optimistic, persistent energy. A crystal that has first healed its own wounding demonstrates how we are more able to help heal others when we first heal our own wounds. We can take this lesson to heart in our own healing practice.

SMOKY - Smoky crystal is a good crystal for grounding. It is also elevating to your mood because it picks up and grounds your negativity. (If you use it for this purpose, be sure to cleanse your Smoky quartz frequently). Crystals become smoky when exposed to radiation and may be natural or irradiated by man. Typically, natural Smoky crystals are usually a lighter grey/brown than crystals which have been artificially irradiated (which are usually almost black). That being said, the only way to know for certain whether a point is naturally or artificially radiated is to ask the person where the point originated.

IRON OXIDE - golden-yellow mineral coating occurring on lots of crystals, usually taken off with an acid bath. Sometimes has rainbow iridescence on the outer layer (like rainbows you see on oil slicks). This is referred to as “Natural Rainbow Aura”. These crystals have an Earthy and grounding energy and remind us what crystals look like in their natural state (before an acid bath).  Sometimes it is trapped in fissures and fractures and doesn't (can't) come off, even with the bath.

DEVIC TEMPLE - Crystals which have Fairy Frost, Mirror Fractures and Rainbows inside are called Devic Temples and are considered Master Crystals. Other sources have described them as "having special places for Light Beings to reside" (which they do). However, the description implies that only Devic Temple crystals have this ability, but in reality, all crystals do. Because all crystals have this ability/inclination, I like to put this reminder here. Devic Temples do have a special energy about them and usually have a lot of internal interest and a sharp, powerful feel.

FAIRY FROST - Fairy Frost is technically fractures and inclusions of air within the crystal. The trapped air is wispy, white and fairy-looking. Lots of crystals have Fairy Frost, some are more fairy-like than others. Crystals with Fairy Frost are able to connect you with Nature Spirits and Fairies (Deva). They encourage us to connect with nature and to care for Mother Earth.

MIRROR FRACTURES - Mirror Fractures are shiny mirror-looking areas within the crystal, caused by damage (shocks (sudden temperature changes), traumas (hits, shaking, shearing Earth movement). Mirror Fractures serve as areas on which to reflect on our traumas and show that our traumas and challenges bring us added beauty and interest.

RAINBOWS - Rainbows are present inside a crystal due to fractures. It is helpful to have very bright light, and you may have to turn the crystal (side-to-side, upside down, etc.) in order to see them. Rainbow crystals are optimistic and happy. They remind us that we are loved and they remind us to look for the gifts our traumas bring us. I think Rainbows are like secret hugs from the Crystal People. It is thrilling and warming. Connect to the gift of love these crystals with Rainbows bring.

KEY - Keys are indentations left by another crystal. Key crystals help you unlock answers to questions you may have. They help you to access anything which you previously were blocked from accessing before you found the key. Is there an area which you could use help in accessing an answer which has previously been blocked to you? The energy of a Key crystal can help you to find an easier, more direct way in. Imagine this as easily opening the lock on the front door and walking right in (rather than having to check all the windows for one that is unlocked, climbing through, scraping your elbows and knocking your head). Ease of access is what Key crystal energy brings us. I like to put my finger in the Key as I work with the crystal. Meditate on the issue for which you need opening while holding the crystal in this way.

IMPRINTS represent how we are affected by outside influences (usually other people). The original structure adapts to its environment as outside influences (associations with people) change its shape or form. This allows for growth and change, while still maintaining the crystal’s basic inherent truth and beauty.

KEY vs IMPRINT: How would you determine a Key versus an Imprint? Both are caused by the presence of another crystal which the main crystal has grown around. A textbook Key typically presents when the termination (or base) of another crystal has penetrated the main crystal, leaving an indentation (like poking your finger straight into the icing on a cake). Sometimes Keys can be partial (say if the 'fingertip' indent was partially lost when the crystal was separated from the matrix). An Imprint usually presents along the sides and occurs like if you laid the side of your finger onto the icing. One is more directly poking into (Key) and the other is more laying side-by-side (Imprint). Because the physical definitions can be kind of arbitrary, I defer to which energy each marking presents with, whether Key or Imprint. Don't get hung up on names, go with energy.

INNER CHILD - An Inner Child (a type of Bridge) is a smaller crystal penetrating a larger crystal. I see Inner Child crystals as smaller and penetrating more ‘in’ than ‘out’. They have a feeling to me of going ‘within’ (thereby helping to bridge the gap between your outer self and your inner self).

SIGILS - Sigils are any markings that represent an idea. (For example, "$" is a sigil that represents money and abundance, a heart represents love, etc.) Surface features which may be etched (tactile) or appear similar to a Record Keeper (seen in the glare of a light but not easily felt). Because a Sigil is a marking that reminds us of an idea or invokes a memory or feeling, the meaning will depend on what the sigil represents to you. Let your mind’s eye wander and see if they take on a life of their own like a video in your mind’s eye, (or if they bring up a thought or feeling). This is a form of scrying and a way to receive the messages that the crystal is bringing to you through the Sigils.

TO VIEW SURFACE FEATURES - To view the surface of the crystal (versus looking inside), hold your crystal parallel to a light source so that you can use the glare that the light creates in order to see what is on the surface. To illustrate: Imagine a very clear lake. If the sun isn't shining off the surface, then you see right down into the lake and you can see rocks and fish and weeds. When the glare of the sun is on the water, you can see things floating on the surface like dust, bugs, or even ripples that you wouldn't have been able to see without the sun's glare. The same is true for surface features on a crystal. The best way to do this (and you will do it for each face) is to find your best light source, the sun if you are outside or a bright light or lamp if you are inside. Then, starting with the main face, work your way around the crystal by tipping it until you can see the surface features in the light's glare. There may be Etching, Record Keepers, Sigils or scratches; sometimes, there are no markings at all. Be patient. Sometimes it takes a little bit of trial and error to get just the right angle.

LINEATED SIDES - Lineated Sides are horizontal striations across the sides of a point, to be used like a zipper to access further knowledge within the crystal. When you have worked with your crystal and feel ready for more information (desire to go deeper), unzip the crystal to receive the next layer of information. Drag your thumbnail down the side of a point to ‘unzip’ and to zip it back up, drag your thumb from the base back to the tip. Unzipping is like opening a box, looking down inside and seeing that the bottom of the box opens to infinite space. There is no end to the amount of ‘extra’ you can receive as you work with and unzip your crystal. Rezipping is like hanging up the phone. It lets the crystal know you are ‘done for now’ and you can pick up where you left off later. Remember after your session to thank the crystal for its help, and zip back up until next time.
